The silhouette is a lonely ghost, who has lifted his arms toward the sky and screams in a foreign language. The phantom approaches the silhouette rapidly, staring at him constantly. The silhouette is a man who screams and listens to the echo. This short man is mysterious; he is a flying mammal of the family of CHIROPTERA.

There is information for the dolphins, but not for this man, who screams in the dark. A bat skin covers his arms; he has a childish look, but his eyeglasses betrayed him. His name is DESMODUS RUFUS.  He has been standing in the middle of the biggest bridge of BLOOR and cries aloud. His screams make the phantom feel horrible. It sounds like someone has driven his fingers into his chest and torn his heart apart. The phantom feels his body shivering.

"This man can do something very dangerous”,-the phantom thinks. He runs, as he almost stops breathing.

"Hey! How can I help you, my friend?”

The silhouette turns his face toward the phantom, but he can’t speak. He looks at the phantom with wonder, thinking how come a phantom could show up all of the sudden? The silhouette looks surprised and upset that someone, like this phantom, is revealing one of his darkest secrets. The silhouette is 1 meter and 70 cm tall. His age is around 60-s. The first impressions, when you see this silhouette is that he is a man, crushed by an internal mental torture.

"Why did you scream, sir?``- the phantom asks him clearly, weighing the words.

The words resound into space. A giant human is making fun of him, by dragging his own words. The incognito silhouette tells him by putting his finger onto his mouth to keep quiet, to listen to the echo, which turns around…

"Do you listen to the echo? The Dolphin Institute in HAWAI used the database to find out what kind of proteins a dolphin consumes, the quantity of fish, the number of breaths per minute, the strange behavior and the wounds. Another database determines the water's conditions, the levels of microbes in the water, the content of bacteria. The echolocation is the method of the sense perception, through which some animals are self orientated, reveal the obstacles, communicate with other animals and find food. I use the echolocation method to orientate myself in this very dark night, that’s why I scream, with my all strength.”

"Where are you from, sir"

"BANIA LUKA, BOSNIA."

The silhouette stops screaming for a moment and starts telling to the phantom his life story.

"I left my homeland, when I was 12 years old. On a freight train straight to Croatia, after a group of Serbians killed my father, my grandmother, my grandfather, two aunts, my uncle and after they burned my house, abducted my sole cow. I left Croatia, when I was 21 years old. I temporarily stayed in Italy and after 7 months there, went to Canada."

He has never seen his country anymore from that time he left and he doesn’t even want to go back there.

"I couldn’t sleep last night. I saw my mom in my dreams, crying. I see the same dream several times a month. The same dream for years, from that time, when my Serbian neighbors came into my house.I was 9 years old… I was staring at a wild man, who was undressing my mother by force….I was shocked and totally weakened. He raped my mother in front of my eyes. I was seeing that shameful scene, while I was shaking and shivering by anger and fear. I don’t remember how many minutes I stayed bewildered, watching my mom moaning and groaning under that man. Those minutes were passing by like hours. I came out of the house, I went into the backyard and I pulled a stick off the fence and I entered the house again. I attacked that man with stick and after that he stopped raping my mother. That terrible act changed me, as a human being, forever. It made me to keep my head down all my life. When I become emotional, I come here and I start screaming, as much as I can and after that, I feel free. I don’t feel the emotional ball growing into my throat for some time. Now, you, my dear phantom, you understand, why I was screaming in the darkness, climbed onto the biggest bridge of BLOOR”- the pour man finishes telling his own story.

“After they raped her, they slapped her so much on her ears, such as she became deaf for all her life. She died two years ago. Now I am a night bat, after her death. I emit the screams, these terrible sounds which are traveling into space, but I am not self orientated in this noise, in this night, even that I am a bat myself. I got trapped somewhere and I lost the sense of echolocation.” The silhouette keeps silent. He wipes his tears out with the back of his left hand.

"Are you going back one day to BANIA LUKA?" the phantom asks the silhouette.

"I can’t go back. I am scared of myself. I might start killing everybody, whoever comes in front of me, or I might get killed! That’s the only thing I can do: I come here sometimes and start screaming. I scream out loud, in order to free my pain.”

These screams are a series of sounds, very short sounds, sharp like knives; these sounds are emitted by himself into the air…These screams come out of his mouth, his internal being and knock on the objects. They create the echo. The noise turns back to this human, giving him information, a sense, a road map where he can see what kind of obstacles are on the road. A night bat can determine the size of an object, the shape, the direction, the distance, even if it is in move. The echolocation system is so precise, such as the night bats can find out the objects thinner than the hair. The dolphins can build some views of the reality, by emitting sounds with very high frequency and register the echo.

The phantom feels embarrassed. He slaps the silhouette affectionately. The silhouette tries to stop sobbing. He invites the phantom, to join screaming with him, in this mysterious night. He puts his hands around his mouth and starts screaming. The phantom screams, too. Their screams are so loud, even the stars can hear in the sky. The phantom screams louder than the silhouette … Then the silhouette screams louder than the phantom. They are a couple of wolves, very wild, who pour their hearts out onto the EARTH, without spare. You can see the light in their eyes. ..The phantom screams more and more, crazy because of the magic of this evening. He looks down the bridge, tens of meters down. He keeps quiet for a moment. He sees the sweet eyes of the silhouette’s mom, which are smiling from the waves of the HUMBER RIVER.
